I had been impressed by Gen.Sosabowski after watching the film, "A Bridge Too Far". The eternal dialogue uttered by the actor playing the General is etched in my memory... "I, am a Pole, considered by many to be intelligent; if that were true, then I belong to a minority. Minority groups are more comfortable in silence". This was his reaction when the plan of Market/Garden was announced. He even asks for a written letter from the British command stating that he was forced to put his troops to service, in the event of them getting massacred.
Even if the dialouge was a little dramatized, it shows the character of the General as a seasoned war-strategist.

I was a witnesss of operation Market-Graden as living in Nijmegen (where the 82nd US Airborne Divison landed and also HQ of General Browning Corps Commmander Airborne). The British planned the Armhem-landing not too well, as General So-sabowski from the beginning has said. Their dropping zone was too far away from the mnain target, he suggested Driel. Later on the Polish Para-brigade has been dropped there to relieve the British para's, who could not hold their own positions any longer. Polish young men were exchanged for British young men, these Polish young men were sent the wrong way. They fought bravely, bur for nothing but to save British soldiers. It was a big shame that the Polish brigade and especially General Sosabowski were blamed for the defeat at Arnhem. Still bigger shame that General Browning afterwards even fired the Polish General. I am glad, being a Dutchman, that our Queen restored the honour of the Polish Airborne Brigade and the honour of General Sosabowski.

I still live in Nijmegen (Netherlands)and I was a witness of operation Market-Garden. I always detested the horrible way the British (especial-ly General Browning) treated General Sosabowski, The British lost the battle around Arnhem not the brave Polish Para-Brigade,This brigade was slaughtered to save British soldiers. The battle around Arnhem was totally planned the wrong way by the British themselves. It was not fair they blamed the Polish Brigade and General Sosabowski after the British defeat. Dear family, My sincere congratulations now the Bronze Lion was accorded to your (great)grandfather and the Militaire Willemsorde to his Brigade. A few times (in the period 1990-1992) I had the honour of giving an adress to the Polish and British heroes of the battle of Arnhem during the commemoration at the Koning Willem III kazerne in Apeldoorn ( hospital for the allied P.O.W's in 1944). It made me an enormous impression. Ds. Marten Mulder retired army-chaplain

Dear relatives of general Sosabowsky,
With my warmest regards I want to say to you `AT LAST` your grandfather and great-grandfather has finally received the Dutch honour he and his fellow Polish soldiers deserved for such a long time. As my queen Beatrix sald in her speech yesterday, it has been an omission by the Dutch government. Her grandmother Wilhelmina wanted to give Dutch medals in 1946, but nothing happened. Thanks to the efforts of the late prince Bernhard, the father of my queen, justice finally has been done after such a long time. If he would be still alive it would have given him great pleasure to decorate the Polish veterans himself. I could see on the Dutch television that queen Beatrix was deeply touched. I have seen her on television for so many times during the years of her reign that I dare to see that she was very moved and emotionally. I hope that that will comfort you all a little bit. I wish your family all the best for the coming years. The familyname Sosabowsky is something you all can be very proud of. I am a little bit ashamed that your father and his soldiers have done so much for my country and that so few people has appreciated that over the past years. I am 50 years old and -although the second world war took place before I was born- I am very greatful to live in a free country because of brave soldiers who gave their lives for my country. Thank you, thank you, very much. God bless you all. Jose Kwakernaat

It is quite humbling to read the story of these Polish men, whose bravery went unrecognised for so long. I must also apologise that because of my ignorance, I cannot read the postings written in Polish, but feel that I must say that I have always held both the Poles and the Dutch in high esteem, as both nationalities are hard working, fair minded people. It is also refreshing to read the comments from the German ex-soldiers, as surely, even if our politicians are doing their best to spoil it, we, the peoples of Europe at last feel like one family?

greetings from the Philippines. Been reading alot about "the general" and the 1st independent Polish parachute brigade.
i readily agree that they were the most undermined soldiers under montgomery and i feel that it was trully an injustice for them to be treated at such.
but finally, but rather too late, the Polish brigade and the general are finally being given rightful recognition by the dutch government for the brigade's invaluable contribution to the war effort.
nonetheless, my heartfelt congratulations to the sosabowski family and to the Polish Brigade. recognition is finally given where recognition has been long overdue.
by warmest regards,
noel s. villegas philippines

My father Lt. Stefan Jaszczyk jumped with the Polish Paratroopers at Arnhem ("A Bridge Too Far") on September 24, 1944. He was proud of his efforts with the Brigade and his love & kindness as a father was without question. He lived in Montreal (Canada) from about 1948 till October, 1995 when he passed away at age 83. May peace and social justice be his legacy to the world.
Sincerely, Art Jaszczyk, Thornhill, Ontario (Canada)

My Mother was very much a part of Operation Market Garden and the Battle of Arnhem. She was in September 17, 1994 a young girl of 16 living in Wolfheze, Gelderland, Holland, very close to Arnhem. My mother witnessed a lot of bravery on the part of the Allies and to this day does not like Germans. Can you blame her?

They were brave men in hard times. Treatend by their allies and their enemys. So, keep the memory alife ... even if you are a German like me.

Sorry but my Englisch is not so good.

A most interesting look into Sosabowski. The General was of course most poorly treated and I was glad to hear about the recent Dutch awards being made to the General himself as well as the Brigade group. A good presentation at the Hartenstein on this. Many thanks.

May I say through the pages of this guest book, many thanks to all of the Dutch personnel from the "20 Natresbataljon" who did such a wonderful job of looking after the Veterans and their families during the presentation week in Den Haag. A Big thank you to Major Willem De Kant, .... who made things run very "Smuzely" at the Golden-Tulip.
Regards to all our Dutch friends for your support to the 1st Independent Polish Parachute Brigade, and making the rehabilitation of General Sosabowski possible.

General Sosabowski was a great human being and a trough hero. It is a shame the way he has been treated by the English after the war. In fact it is a bloody shame. This man had a hart of gold and courage like no one else. We are pleased by the fact that he will be honoured, tomorrow 31-5-2006, for his part in operation Market Garden. My thoughts are with him and all my love goes to his family. We are still greatfull of what he has done to liberate our country. May God Bless Him and Bless You All.

At last these brave men and their general get some recognition. Hopefully the British will give the Polish also the recognition that they should have. A brave ally upon which the British always could count and ... which they let down at the moment that the Polish needed them to back them up against the plans of Stalin. A black page in the history of Great Britain and that with the good reputation of sportivity ... this should not have happen. But let us for one moment rejoice that (although too little and too late) some recognition will be given. Good work Dutch parliament that you overruled an old law to make an exception to make right what older politicians didn't dare to too. H. Trappeniers (Belgium)

It was absolutely very, very brave what Mr. Sosabowski did together with his soldiers in Driel in Holland. I'm Dutch and born in '45 and because of his braveness we al can speak Dutch these days in this country instead of German. Thank you very very much again.

Dear sir,
I am very happy to hear that finally you are about to receive what is rightfully yours: a well deserved Dutch decoration.
Being a Dutchman I feel ashamed and I think it is an outrage that your grandfather and his men never received the well deserved honor and gratitude from our country for what they have so bravely undertaken in the fight for our freedom.
I sincerely hope that the ceremony tomorrow will take away some of the grief and anger everyone of you must have felt about this.
I am fifty five years of age and fortunaly never experienced the horror of war, but I know that due to your effort I am living in a free country and I want to thank all of you for this.
Kindest regards,
Ben de Bree Roosendaal Netherlands

'Stasinek' made the difference!
Hopefully the British will recognize this soon!
At least the British ambassador was in The Hague to attend the ceremony. It's his duty to wake up the British government so that they finally can recognize this heroic person, General Sosabowski.
They really earn him and his family something!

"The Sosabowski family offer gratitude for this, and the kind emails of support."
You don't have to offer us anything, we have to offer YOU our gratitude!
If your forefather didn't do what he did.. maybe we didn't live how we do now.
My greatest inexpressible gratitude to your family!
'Thank You' sounds too less.
I'm very touched by the fact that 'your' General (finally) received what he earned 60 years ago with great heroism!
My sincere gratitude, Hayo Busscher hab@euphonynet.be

Dear Sir/Madam,
Hereby I attach my email to the Polish embassy in the Netherlands. The translation in English is below.
In Dutch:
Geachte heer/mevrouw,
Mijn onuitsprekelijke dank daarvoor!
(Eventueel via email. U mag mijn email-adres erbij vermelden.)
Met nogmaals felicitaties en vriendelijke groet, Hayo Busscher hab@euphonynet.be
Translation in English:
Dear Sir/Madam,
Hereby I wish to congratulate you with the 'Militaire Willemsorde' and the 'Bronzen Leeuw', the highest military medal in the Netherlands.
Unfortunately this took place 60 years after the events, it should have been done earlier, but therefore it is not less meaningful. Luckily Queen Wilhelmina ordered this 60 years ago.
I myself wasn't born until 1967, but from stories I understand that we have to thank Poland and the Polish a lot !
I wish to give you my inexpressible gratitude for all the things you did !
They will never be forgotten and will always have a place in the heart of the Dutch people.
Would you please be so kind to place this message in a place where everybody can read it or let the people know who it concerns?
(You can also name my email-address.)
Again my Congratulations and Many Thanks.
With regards, Hayo Busscher hab@euphonynet.be

On a very good day May-31-2006 for history, truth and respect: Dear Sosabowski family, I thank you with my deepest feelings of gratitude for your heroism and perseverance fighting the Germans. Also I see your competence to both help but also express criticism, to the English. Being dutch I recognise that. We share that in our missions for the UN now. Also we hope to enjoy a common future in Europe, welcome!

Dear family Sosabowski,
Together with my 9-year old son Krystian I saw the documentary film about general Sosabowski. After watching it, a mixture of shame and glory came over me. Shame (as a Dutch citizen) that such a brave man was a victim of political intriges. Glory that he finally did get what he so well deserved. Glory for all Polish soldiers who fought and (some of them) gave their lives for a free Europe. Glory to all the Polish families who suffered over the loss of their loved-ones after the war. Today, finally justice and acknowledgement did triumph. General Sosabowski received the medal of Bronze Lion (for Bravery) and for all Polish veterans the Military Willemsorde. The highest Dutch military decoration. Hopefully the General will have his peace in heaven. My son is very glad that the General was decorated, he said: "Finally".

I have known about the bravery of the General and his men for a long time (I study WW2 privatly), and it always made me mad that they never gotten the honour they deserve. Congratulations! I like to congratulate you with the decorations you have received today on which your grandfather had a right too (already since 1944, the Market Garden operation) as being a hero in the liberation of the Netherlands during the 2nd world war.
Thank you for that.Peace be with you. May General Sosabowski rest in peace.

I will lay red corn poppy's on the memorial in Driel tomorrow for the honor of the brave men who fought and died to liberate and safeguard my mother in Driel while their countrymen were being murdered in Warsaw. In all gratitude I must maintain that their rightfull place was in Warsaw in those months to fight for thair own soil. I honor the men who came regardless to save us, especially their commander who new their chances of succes and survival were slim at best. My respect and undying gratitude to you all and the family of General Sosabowski in particular.

Earlier today, we watched the ceremony honouring both the General and his Brigade in the live national broadcast covering the event. It was very impressive. But so, of course, was the extraordinary contribution of those honoured today to the liberation of our country so long ago. These people - your family, friends and countrymen - certainly deserve our praise and gratitude. Please know that this was not a casual ceremony. For we noted that the Queen delivered a remarkable speech. She is not often (or actually ever) allowed to speak as open and frank as she did today. Clearly, this was a special occasion. She acknowledged that the sad failure to immediately recognize and honour the contribution of general Sosabowski and his brigade was an historical error. She also made it quite clear, however, that this injustice occurred in spite of her father's (and her grandmother's) efforts to the contrary. She suggested that this belated acknowledgement - this celebration of the military honour and courage of Polish combattants awarded (posthumously) today - was something her father in particular had long hoped for. And in fact the now late Prince Bernhard himself expressed this publically only a short while ago. And now she clearly felt honoured to have been given the chance at last to try and correct the old wrong. For me personally, I am glad the Queen was finally allowed to formally express our collective gratitude to General Stanis?aw Sosabowski and his Brigade - and by informal extension to a multitude of other Polish friends. Today, I felt I was very well represented by our Queen. I was born in the 1960s but I have always been very aware of the historical debt we owe to the actual people who fought to liberate us. The reason for this is quite irrelevant: I am just grateful and I thank you for providing me with the opportunity to express my gratitude in this guestbook.

It is regretful the confirmation of appreciation for the General took so long, no doubt due to political struggle. We are therefor pleased our Queen made such clear statements. Strong personalities in general are pushed outof sight. Sunday, 17 September 1944 our sister had a bomb on her bike close to Arnhem. Our family experienced those days intensly. We followed all the programms on this issue from the very beginning and intensly enjoyed yesterdays decoration. The injustice that this was withheld from the General during his life is sorrowful. Dear family Sosabowski,
as a citizen of a small village lying at the border of what used to be Hell's highway I have always been interested in operation Market Garden and keen on honoring those who liberated us. Although the story of gen. Sosabowski and his first parachute brigade has been known to me for quite a number of years I have never known everything after the war ended up just as bad for him as for the entire polish nation. Although I am only 36 years of age and was never in the opportunity to express my gratitude, it is still with shame and deep remorse I want to thank you for what the free polish soldiers and in particular gen. Sosabowski did for us. I hope that the British nation wil also come to their senses and rewrite their twisted version of the events that happend in sept 44. A thousand thanks,
Marcel Kerkhofs

At last these brave men get some recognition. Hopefully the British will give the Polish also the recognition that they should have. A brave ally upon which the British always could count and ... which they let down when the moment came to back them up against the plans of Stalin. A black page in the history of Great Britain. The British have a good reputation of sportivity, this destroying of a loyal but critical friend should not have happen. But let us for one moment rejoice that (although too little and too late) some recognition is given. Good work, Dutch Parliament that you overruled an old law to give the honours that the Polish should should have got long time ago but some old politicians where to coward to oppose the British. H. Trappeniers (Belgium)

Dear Friends I recently had the honour of receiving an invitation to attend the ceremony at the Grote Kerk in the Hague on May 31. My father was Richard Tice, an American serving with the First Independentr Polish Paratroop Brigade, who was killed at Driel on Sept. 22, 1944. Since I will be attending the broadcast ceremony, I may not have the opportunity to meet any of General Sosabowski's family (although I met Michael briefly in Driel in 2004) to offer personally my congratulations on the honour that is (finally!) being bestowed on General Sosabowski, as well as the others who served with him at Arnhem. Should our paths not cross, please accept this e-mail as an expression of my extreme pleasure at the honour your grandfather/great-grandfather is receiving. Sincerely
Heather Haake

Czesc Pan, This past weekend the daughter of Lt. Tice visted Cleveland, Ohio. She was visiting the other American volunteer in the para brigade, James A. Burnham. Jim was the best man at Lt.Tices wedding in Scotland in 1943. Jim Burnham was discharged from the Polish army in early 1944 because of helath problems. He lost contact with Lt.Tices widow after he returned to the United States. I have seen wonderful photo's of the men and their wives in Scotland and the Polish Hospital in Aberfeldy, Scotland. Heather Tice Haake lives in British Columbia Canada and has been inveited to the award ceremony in Hague next month. I hope you get to meet her. She is a wonderful and gracious owman and was overwelmed by the adjulation and gratitude she received from the Polish veterans when she was at the 60th anniversary celebration in 2004.

As a Dutch citizen born in 1977 I have nothing but respect and gratitude for the heroism of all our liberators, but in particular of the 1st Polish Airborn division led by General Sosabowski.
Because of their heroism I am a free young man living together with my lovely Polish girlfriend. We have nothing but gratitude and respect.

we in the 1st British Airborne Division have always had the highest regard for General Sosabowski and his gallant 1st Polish Parachute Brigade without whom the whole Division would have been lost With the support of the British Parachute Regiment Association we have started to raise money for a bronze memorial in Driel to General Sosabowski and the men of the Polish Parachute Regiment. The memorial will be unveiled in Driel on 16 September 2006 and we hope that as many as possible of the Arnhem Veterans, Polish and British and their families will be there this year and in future to honour the memory of our brave comrades in the 1st Polish Brigade and of a great Polish Hero Tony Hibbert Brigade Major 1st British Parachute Brigade

Hello There It is with great pleasure that i have the chance to put a comment on your Web Site.I was really anoyed as to how the Britsh Commanders would not listen to Major General Stanislow Sosabrowski suggestions as to employ his own men.I think that an apology should have been presnted to him after it was proven that he was very correct in his own ways of conducting his Airborne Troops. He was very correct and to the point that the operation Market Garden was a disaster in the making.I myself being a member of the Cdn Forces during Peace Time but do understand as to what went on.The General was a very coragous man and he should have been given the benafit of dought.

I was glad to encounter your site, while looking for more information about the 1st Polish Parachute Brigade (Pierwszej Brygada) of which my uncle by marriage, Josef Szulgo (1922-1994) was a member, a bugler who survived the "turkey shoot" at Arnhem.
I trust that history will be kind to General Sosabowski. All war, in any era, is hell.

I'm very happy having found this site. And astonished, that people of other countries than poland are interested in Gen.Sosabowski's fate.As I was young I visited arnhem, after that all wanted was to serve in the brigade which is carrying his name. And I did.Certainly in a part this hero has got an influence, on my life.THANK YOU!

Sadly it is many years to late, but finally justice has been done! Although I was born many years after WW II, I felled ashamed when I saw the documentary on Dutch TV last year and it was likely that nothing was being done to get Gen. Sosabowski and the Polish soldiers honoured by the Dutch government. I hope now you will also recieve the appreciation from the British government for all that the Polish soldiers have done to liberate the Netherlands and the rest of Europe.

I never knew your grandfather was scapegoated for Montgomery`s obvious mistakes at Arnhem. I can only hope that justice will prevail. Congratulations with the honour of recieving the dutch "Militaire Willems Orde" for General Sosabowski. On the other hand: it's a shame that it took the dutch government so many years to take this decision. It's also a shame that mr.Montgomery blamed General Sosabowski for the defeat at Arnhem. So now in turn it's the British government who should review history.I really hope you succeed in changing their mind and fully support that.

Dear family Sosabowski.
I just heard the great news that the brave Polish soldiers who fought for our freedom are to be decorated. I also learned that General Sosabowski ended his career as a hotel-porter in London. A deep shame comes over me when I realise that all these years (51 years !!) our liberators were not seen as such.
Please be sure that the Dutch people are very grateful for what you did, already for 51 years !!
Bring our gratetude to those who are still alive and to their relatives.
GENERAL SOSABOWSKY AND OTHER POLISH SOLDIERS. THANK YOU. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

Dear Sosabowski Family, last Friday, December 9th, the Dutch Government, on request of Dutch Parliament, decided to grant the First Independent Polish Parachute Brigade the Militaire Willems-Orde, the highest Dutch recognition for Bravoury. Furthermore, its commander, General Stanislaw Sosabowski, will be granted the Bronze Lion for his personal efforts in the Operation Market Garden. As initiator of the Parliamentary Motion to recognize our Polish liberators, I am very grateful that we, more than 60 years after the Battle of Arnhem, finally did the only right thing. Yours sincerely, Hans van Baalen MP

At last the heavy shroud that has hung over the General and the Brigade has lifted ! Gratitude and Eternal Thanks to the Dutch people without whose support the rehabilitation may never have occurred. ! Now, the Soldiers of the Brigade may rest in peace !

Finally the Dutch government has agreed to honour the Polish soldiers who fought "At Arnhem" by awarding them one of the most important medals there is in Holland. In my opinion it has taken far too long for these brave men to be given the recognition they deserve!! Credit to the Sosabowski family for their hard work to make this happen!!! You kept the discussion alive in the Netherlands.....

I've just read the news about the Dutch Militaire Willemsorde that is FINALLY awarded to our Polish Heroes who fought under the command of Gen. Sosabowski. From what I understand, the General himself, will be awarded with the Bronze Lion.
It's 61 years too late. But better late than never. Congratulations to you all.

I have for a long time been a an avid student of the Market Garden Operation and believe it could achieved it's objectives, dispite considerable flaws in it's brilliant plan.
What is clear in my mind is that had more of General Sosabowski's allied colleagues listened to his advice and stratergies the likelyhood of a successful outcome would have increased considerably.
The passing of time and the considerable analysis of this battle, again in my view, justifies his opinions. And makes post battle critisim of his conduct both unwarrented and crass.
My generation owes a great deal of gratitude to the likes of Stainislaw Sosabowski and the soldiers, airmen and sailors of all the allied countries that gave so much for our freedom.
I congratulate you on insuring that the history of such persons is freely available, so that everyone can appreciate what such people did on behalf of the free world.

Stanislaw Sosabowski was a great visionair and a great leader of the Polish army, undoubtly a great man who was a victim of the English and the Dutch government for which 60 years later, the English and Dutch government should be asshamed.Sosabowski and the members of the Polish army as well as the AK home army of Poland, are heroes who deserve far more credit.

A great man who dared to question higher command and paid the price of their folly. He knowingly still went in with his comrades and performed his duty to his utmost. Shame on the British high Command for the post war treatment of this leader. Do not fear - he is not forgotten!

Congratulations for your most interesting site! I always have in mind these words regarding general Sosabowski on the way he was treated after the battle: «THIS WAS A SHAMEFUL ACT BY BRITISH COMMANDERS.» (Martin Middlebrook in «Arnhem 1944, the airborne battle». You should send your web site URL to Montgomery's descendants keeping in mind these words from Prince Bernhard, prince of the Netherlands: «My country can never again afford the luxury of another Montgomery success.» as quoted by Cornelius Ryan in A bridge too far.
Again congratulations!

I've been to the rememberance of Market Garden last year in the town of Oosterbeek. In Driel near Oosterbeek we remembered the polish soldiers. We remembered those who fought for our freedom. We are still thankfull for all the Polish and the British soldiers who fought in a strange country for our freedom. At this rememberance I saw the line : Witamy Weteranow (thank you veteans.)So know that the Polish soldiers are still in our hearts

I am writing to wish you and your family well,it is good that you keep the memory of the great general alive,it is important for people to know the truth,he was treated badly by the high command at the time. My father(died 2001) fought with the 11th armoured brigade up that long road from the belgian border into Holland, and told me about that time. keep up the good work on this website, Best wishes Sean Murphy

I live near Stamford, where the Polish Airborne were billeted. Many Poles, offspring of those who fought at Arnhem, live and work in this area. Sosabowski's men fought and died for freedom in a foriegn land whilst their own was being carved up. It's a tragic story.

Dear Family og the great general Sosabowsky,
This week I read in the (Dutch) morningpaper "Het Algemeen Dagblad" that the Dutch minister of Defense mr. Kamp finally has agreed to give general Sosabowsky (and Polish veterans) a decoration for their bravity in the Second World War. AT LAST!!!!! Just before Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands died he said in an interview on the Dutch television that he was ashamed the none of the Polish liberators of Arnhem were decorated for all they had done for the Dutch people.
I wanted to let you know that at last (although you grandfather is no longer with us)
I wish you all "A merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

Yesterday evening I saw the documentary about your (grand) father and his men fighting in operation Market Garden for the second time on dutch TV and I was touched again. On behalf of my family and especially my two sons I would thank the brave Polish paratroopers and their great commander for all they did for our country and people. I hope the dutch government will decorate all the Polish paratroopers who fought for our freedom! Also after almost 60 years. It's never to late... Peter Egge

This evening again was a television programme about your great grandfather. I didn't see this before. I can only think: what a cowards they were (the ministers who refused to give him the honours he deserved). It is too late now, but better late then never: I want to say: I admire what he did. It is so nice that you are still fighting to give him the place in history he deserves. I wish you all the succes in fighting this injustice. Thanks from the bottom of my hart for what he did for us. He is a real hero. I hope he becomes our hero in Holland. Whe should have known before. Now we know! Thanks again,

I've just seen a documentry on the Dutch television about general Sosabowski and I must say I was very moved about it. What surpised me was the fact that the general and the Polish paratroopers didn't receive the recognition for there bravery and will to fight from the other Allied countries. I think the family of Sosabowski can be very proud of this man, who helped in the liberation of Holland and I hope the Dutch government will consider to decorate some of the Polish paratroopers that fought at the Battle of Market Garden!

As a inhabitant of Holland I felt ashamed when I heard the story of general Sosabowsky that he never received a medal for his efforts at Arnhem, Market Garden. I composed music called Market Garden in which I remember general Sosabowsky and his men together with the Airgunners who assemble every year in my city Dronten. Please sign the WW2forum at www.backtonormandy.org or listen to the music at www.fredvogels.nl

Very interesting website. Thank you for giving so mauch information about general Sosabowski. I hope the Dutch government will soon change their opinion and give the Polish heroes recognition (decorations) for their heroism in liberating parts of the Netherlans and their roll in Market Garden. Many Dutch people hope so!

Iw was wonderful to find a website commemorating the Great Pole General Stanislaw Sosabowski just in the year of issuing the coins depicting General. I'm affraid that General is known not enough in Poland, and I hope that the collector coins will improve that situation a bit. Warmest regards to the whole Sosabowski Family for their good job!!!. The Polish were some of the finest soldiers and airmen in WW2. They were prepared to fight and die for the Allies, never giving up hope that they could one day return to a free Poland. What did the Allies do at the end? Ignored them, banned them from the Victory parades, and abandoned them to an uncertain future in the "New Europe" formed by politics in '45.
What did General Sosabowski do? He dared to question the planning of the Arnhem campaign and had genuine concern for the lives of his men. Of course, his real crime was to upset the British establishment, so no surprise there in what happened to him afterwards.
The General, his soldiers, the Polish pilots that helped save Britain, the Polish soldiers that stormed into Monte Cassino, the Home Army betrayed by the Allies, and all Polish fighters in WW2 have nothing to be ashamed of and can hold their heads up high.
I hope the General's name can be cleared, although as far as I am concerned it never was blackened, and support this campaign by his family. Afterall, if this "troublesome thorn" had been listened to, many men might have lived to see another day.

Dear Sirs.
The British should be ashamed about teh way they treated General Sosabowski en his Polish troops. They did their jobs in the most valiant way. It was the mistake from the English Fieldmarshall that Market Garden was a failure. It is time that General Sosabowski and his Men get the credits they fully deserve. I know that the Dutch will not forget their Polish liberators, you can ask the elder habitants of te Dutch town Breda.
Yours sincerely,
Rens Oosterom.

I saw the documentary on Dutch television last week. I was shocked by what I heared and saw although I myself never have had any doubt about the role and the bravery of the Polish soldiers, because in my family the Polish are always menioned in the sma sentence as the British and the Americans if we talk about our liberators. To the Polish veterans I would like to say that they will never be forgotten as the ones who saved our lives and our freedom. Dowidsenia (I hope I spell this right)Untill we meet again. Ronald

It is only now, 60 years after Market-Garden that the role of the Polish paratroops at Arnhem has clearly been revealed to many Dutch, like myself. I whish the Dutch government has the wisdom, historical awareness, respect and gratitude to reconsider dutch government decisions from more than 50 years ago and to finally decorate the Polish paratroops for their courageous and important role in the operation Market-Garden.

Yesterday I saw the documentary on Dutch television. I knew that Polish soldiers had helped to liberate my country. I had no idea that the Dutch government had not done anything to decorate and thank the Polish soldiers. Queen Wilhelmina had asked the Dutch government in 1946 (!) to decorate 10 brave soldiers. But the government had refuses. General Sosabowski has done a very good job in the war. I hope that history will be rewrtitten and that the general will be rebilitated. Prince Bernhard tries to do so. I hope that he will succeed. I hope that your famuily will know how gratefull the Dutch people are. I was born in 1956, after World War II but I am gratefull to live in a free country. Thanks to all the brave soldiers.

This week I saw the documentary about the role of Sosabowski's parabrigade in Arnhem/Driel on the Dutch TV (EO/Ned1). A brave effort of the program makers and all participants to honour the courage and selfsacrifice of all those - espacially Sosabowski's and Frost's brigade - to try to liberate the Netherlands from the nazi regime. Thus consciously playing russian roulette with their own lives, not even for their own country and people, but for others they didn't even know. Hopefully the effort of the program makers results into an official acknowledgement of the price these men (and their families) have paid. Hopefully the contribution of Prince Bernhard (despite his age and poor health) and the argument of Cora Baltussen will give the necessary push for justice.
And a bloody shame that my own Dutch government (in particular the Dpt of Defence) still covers up the blunders of the highest allied command, that bickered like infants, flaunting like peacocks, for the highest honour while forsaking those who did the dirty job on the river Rhine. Without the brave Sosabowski Brigade, many many more Brits would have been massacred in the perimeter.
Fortunately, the inhabitants of the Arnhem/Nijmegen region, even the younger generations, know better what these men have sacrificed for them. We shall never forget.

Having read the report of all, it disturbs me that a very good friend of Britain in the time of war should be so disgustingly and shabbily treated. If this is the FAIR treatment of an allie.I would say to treat someone so unfair and in favour of some people who had not proven their track record is beyond belief. As an ex parachute regiment member may I say a big thankyou to this GREAT man and all who gave us the freedom to be able to write this message.God bless you sir and all your family.

Deep respect for the courage of the Polish paratroupers and in paritucular for the general. In this moment of remembrance it is hard to realise great military leaders found their personal glory of greater importance than the life of so many good men and the victory on the enemy.

Arnhem, 18th of September 2004
My father was in Breda when he was liberated by the Polish army and of course by the other armies such as the Canadians etc. He was of course all the allied armies gratefull for their liberation, but he mentioned especially the Polish soldiers. I was today for the first time in Driel to attend to the ceremony for the Polish soldiers. I am glad to know more about the history of Stanislaw Sosabowsky and his men and I will never forget them. Thank you for this informative homepage.
Best wishes, Jaqueline Jonker

Thanks to a recent television documentary i have come te realise the importance of what general Sosabowski and his soldiers have done for us. I am shocked by the fact that the general and his soldiers have not been honoured as they should be. Today i am taking part in the remembrance at Driel. I sincerely hope that some dag they will receive what they deserve.

My heart bleeds when I think about the Polish Army. Sentenced to slaughter by a peacock-like fieldmarshall they fought so hard to do an idiotic mission. Its Gods will they liberated north of Flanders and Monte Cassino and had to wait so long for the liberation of their country. One of their bravest soldiers ( Italy )worked as a farmhand with my fathers Godfather in Bretueil in France till his retirement. He never saw his country again and died as a lonely but remarkably happy man. May he be in heaven with his parents and family for whom he craved so much. Your side is very good , please continue. Having watched a very interesting documentary last night 15 September 2004 aired on Dutch television, I was shocked to learn about the fate of General Sosabowski as well as the fact that apparently the role of the Polish Brigade was gravely underestimated during Operation Market Garden. To put it flatly: it is a bloody shame that the Polish Forces did not receive the recognition they deserved, but instead had to live with a smudged reputation! I dearly hope that there will be a full rehabilitation for both the General (and his descendants) as well for all of the Polish Forces. Corrie Zuidhof, NL Delegation at NATO

My name is Roland and I was born in 1972. So all I know about the second world war is that what I have read in books, seen on TV or in films and that what my parents told me. My mother was 6 years old when she had to flee from Arnhem in 1944. She fled with her family to Deventer. I was born there and as a little boy aged 4 I watched the filming of "A bridge to far", although I have no memories of watching it al.
Last night I watched the tv-program about general Sosabowski and I was truly deeply moved and shocked about hearing how unjust he was treated, not only by the British but also by the Dutch government. I could not hold back the tears hearing how this great man did all he could, although he had his doubts about the operation, to liberate the British soldiers from Oosterbeek. I am ashamed that my government never gave this man and his soldiers the honour they diserve, and I hope that our government will now be so curages to correct this mistake. WAKE UP POLITICIANS! Give the Polish soldiers that fought (and died) for our freedom the honour and medals they diserve. Clear the name of general Sosabowski and his men!

Last weekend I visited Oosterbeek Cemetery and saw that the Gravestones of our Polish Liberators are placed at the outskirts of the Cemetery instead of amongst all the other allies. I find it such a shame to see this and even more that Polish soldiers such as Mr. Kazimierz Chartonowicz, Army# 30451 killed at Oosterbeek on Sept. 25th '44 don't even have a gravestone, even though all details are known. This is as shameful as the way your family-member Mr. S. Sosabowski was treated by the other allies. As a dutchman, I watched our Minister of Defense on Television last week were he rejected a rehabilition, because he did not want to stir things up from 1952. This mentality is so typical Dutch Government like. They are the real cowards and your Stanislaw and his brave patriots are the true liberators we owe our respect en gratitude to. As a band-aid to the bad performance of our Government I can tell you that the majority of the Dutch people want a 100% rehabilition for the Polish Liberators, and that these days the discussion is really running through the country on a daily base. Furthermore I would like you to know that all Polish men/women are very welcome to the Netherlands at all times, let's finally give the Polish people the honour they deserve! Cornelis

I am a 33 years old woman from Driel. I have lived there since I was born. And as far as I can remember there have always been commemorations in Driel. I have been told that it has started in september 1945. People from Driel will never forget their Poles. As a kid I always thought everyone in Holland knew about the Poles who had fought in Driel, but now I know that they were forgotten for a long time. Last Tuesday I was at the opening of an exposition in Driel called "The Poles of Driel in sight again". It was opnened by Cora Baltussen, a remarkable woman who I think dedicated here life to tell everyone about the Poles and what they did in Driel. With the documentation last night on television she had a big audience to tell her and their story. Anyone interested in the Poles of Driel shoud visit the exhibition in the Church of Driel it is open till 20 September daily between 10.00 and 17.00. This Saturday some Polish paratroopers from the new Sosabowski brigade will jump again above Driel at 13.30. At 15.30 the commemoration at Plac Polski will start. A lot of veterans will be there. It is a great honour to be able to speak with them. It is said that this years commemorations will be the last big commemorations. But I hope that untill it is possible the veterans will come back every year. I know they will always be welcome in Driel.

It is a big shame how frustrated English officers tried en succeeded to blame gen. Sosabowski for the failure of market garden.
As a Dutch boy during the second world war, I was very much excited when we heard for the first time of the landing. Not knowing that we had to endure another harsh winter in Amsterdam before being liberated.
What I heard and read was that Gen. Sosabowski was one of the very few who openly warned for the great risks of the operation. Nevertheless, when his english comrades were in great danger, he didn't hesitate to do everything in his power to help his comrades out.
It is hardly to believe that, sofar, his former allies couldn't have the courage to acknowledge what injustice is done to this hero.
Our Prince Bernhard strongly asked for a rehabilitation of Sosabowski en give him an Dutch award.
I hope that in due course Gen. Sosabowski will get all honour he deserves.

I'm born in 1949, a child after the second war,so my life in a free democratic country as Holland was 10.000 times better than the awful ending of one of the greatest generals from Poland, Stanislaw Sosabowski. This is what i write on the site of "Market Garden Foundation aims for rehabilitation General Sosabowski". Please honour them NOW, and specialy General Sosabowski,it's a shame of the Dutch parlement if the wait longer. And Yes, forget politics and laws, he and all the Polish brothers deserves it !!

I'm a young man from holland, grew up near Arnhem.I think it's a shame that our gouvernment and the British command didn't gave you the respect you've earned. The Polish soldiers had to make an huge offer. Not only did they fought very bravely, and had many casualties, they couldn't fight in their own fatherland with their brothers, friends, family and loved one's. I want to thank you all, and I hope all the men, women and family will get the respect they earn. I'm sure that many people have the same feelings I have. My love goes to you all. Maybe that's more than a medal beacause it's straigh from the heart

Today on dutch television I watched a very interesting documentary of the Sosabowski Brigade during operation Market Garden and the roll of the Sosabowski Brigade in it. I was very impressed but also dissapointed how things can go. I also heard today in the news that the minister of Defense Mr. H. Kamp will yet, after all those years, rehabilitation of the Sosabowski Brigade. This documentary opened a lot of eyes. I sincerly hope this will happen very soon. Some years ago I borrowed "Parachute General" by S. Sosabowski from my late father, who was active in the organisation and protection of escape lines from Poland to France. These days the history of Polish resistance to nazi-Germany as generally described in The Netherlands, starts getting away from the nazi-soviet version. On 14 and 15 september I videotaped an EO TV documentary of the forgotten Poles at Arnhem.

My late father Captain Jan Wierczewski was a glider pilot at Arnhem in operation Market Garden. He survived but spoke little about the war. It was a bad expierience for himand better left in the past. His life afterwards was a success. he married & lived in the UK was an industrial paint chemist and developed the panchromatic paint used on the green road signs used here.He always said it was good luck that the Nazi Bastards missed shooting him!

Congratulations on an excellent website about a remarkable man. The way such a fine soldier was treated by the airborne senior officers was disgraceful and shameful. I'm familiar with the landing areas at Oosterbeek and it's obvious at a glance that the landing zones were ill-chosen but to disregard the objections of such a senior and experienced officer is unfathomable. It's also such a shame that such a man should end his post military career in such an ignominious way - such people should never have been treated so lightly and I feel ashamed on behalf of my fellow countrymen. Your family must be both pleased and proud to have such a remarkable relative!

After watching Gene Hackman portray the General in "A Bridge Too Far" I read up further on the General. I think Gene Hackman was an excellent copy and did him proud. I'm of Polish descent and proudly served in the 101st Airborne Division but luckily it was in peace time. I now now more on how the Polish serviceman were treated in WWII by having read "Question of Honor" about the members of the "Kosciuszko Squadron". Thanks to all who served.

As a first generation Polish - Australian I am very interested in what had transpired during the Second World War. i am particularly motivated to learn what roles freedom loving Poles played in ultimately helping stem the tide of fascism. I am very proud to be able to read about General Sosobowski - he has been an inspiration to me in my role in The Australian Defence Force. Lt(AAC) R R Herzig

The Major General was definitely the type of man who needed to be listened to during Market Garden. All would have been different if Browning would have heeded his warnings and suggestions.

This is my first visit to your web site. I shall return to spend more time reading through. It is very interesting to see how the larger picture unfolds with pieces of history such as those which are outlined here.

Just a note to thank the Sosabowski family and especially Michael who attended the unveiling of two Polish Parachute Brigade related memorials in Stamford UK on 7th May 2004. It was fitting to see a relative of the late Generals unveil a plaque at his former HQ, which has now taken it's place in Stamford's history.
You can find some photo's of the events at the following link ....

It is not often that you find exactly what you are looking for when searching the Internet! I am really glad I found your valuable information resource. Personally I'm looking to improve my webdesigning skills and got some inspiration from this site. Content is king but it also has to look good, as it does on your site. Thanks!

Sir! My name is Christel Sandell-Andersson and I live in Finland. I found your web-site when searching internet. Very informative. I wonder if You can suggest something for me. I have for several years tried to find information about my grandfather and his family. My grandfather Zdzislaw Jaworski probably born in Sambor 1904. His father was Jozef Jaworski president of the court in Sanok 1927 - wisch means to me he was a judge - lawyer. Do you know where to find information about judges from that time? I have tried with the secretary at Sejmu ( they have been helpful - but there is no records - they was distroyed during the war)
I saw at Your site that You have a judge in the family - father - grandfather - and from the same area in former Poland.
In Stryj history is a J. Jaworski...but I know that Jaworski is a very common name.
Thank you for any kind of answer Christel Sandell-Andersson

I am a great admirer of Major-General Stanislaw Sosabowski who appeared to be one of the very few who dared to challenge Montgomery's irresponsible plans for Arnhem. Irresponsable in the sense that so many subordinates died due to one man's ambitions.
